Cleats for Kids in Action!

On July 20th and 22nd, I was able to go to the Richmond Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club to distribute cleats, teach the kids the basics of soccer, and have a great time!

We did stations around the facility so each group of kids could get a closer look into how to properly kick, pass, dribble, and stop the soccer ball.

At the end of the session, my friends, Jenna, Megan, Patrick, and I had the honor of awarding two soccer balls to one boy and girl who we thought worked hard and enjoyed the sport. Also, we donated the two goals we used so they could then play soccer anytime they were at the club.

Cleats for Kids Introduction

Cleats for kids is my Girl Scout Gold Award project. The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. I came up with the idea when I realized how many children don't have the resources and opportunities to play sports. I wanted to make it possible for them to experience a sport so they can be part of a team, gain sportsmanship skills, learn ways to have a healthy lifestyle, and mostly, have fun with children their own age.

I was fortunate enough to be exposed to soccer at a young age, and it had a significant and very positive impact on my life. I really want to help others have that experience too. Through Cleats for Kids, I plan to collect gently-used soccer cleats at various locations in the area (to be provided soon) and distribute them to programs for underprivileged youth. I also plan to hold training sessions to help some of these young kids learn basic soccer skills. I will show them how to dribble, shoot and pass the soccer ball. More than anything, though, I will give these children a chance to have fun and enjoy the amazing sport of soccer!
